Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Taiwan through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned Nicaragua for supporting China and cut off diplomatic relations with their countries. Taiwan’s decision is considered to cause hurt and regret because it benefits Beijing.
Taiwan views Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega as not caring about the friendship that exists between the people of Taiwan and Nicaragua, quoted from Reuters.
The ministry also stated that Taiwan has always been a loyal and reliable friend to Nicaragua. He stated that as a member of the international community, Taiwan has the right to have diplomatic relations with other countries.
On Thursday (9/12), Nicaragua decided to end their diplomatic ties with Taiwan, shifting its support to China. This decision made Taipei’s overseas support less and less.
“The government of the Republic of Nicaragua today severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan and (the two countries) ceased to have any contact and official relations,” Nicaragua’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
“The People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing the whole of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory,” the statement added.
Nicaragua’s action was welcomed by the Chinese government. China’s Ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, congratulated Nicaragua.
“We highly commend the appropriate decision made by the Government of Nicaragua. It is in line with current trends and public aspirations,” Zhang said in a twitter statement.
The One-China principle is a consensus widely accepted by the international community and is unlikely to be challenged,” Zhang added.
Not only that, China and Nicaragua will hold talks in Tianjin. This information comes shortly after Nicaragua announced it was severing ties between the country and Taiwan.
quote Reuters, Nicaragua’s decision is a severe blow to Taiwan and the United States, which support Taipei over its sovereignty dispute with Beijing.
Relations between the US and Nicaragua deteriorated further after the US State Department said it had imposed sanctions on Nestor Moncada Lau, Ortega’s national security adviser. The Americans accused Lau of carrying out an import and customs fraud scheme to enrich members of the Ortega government.
The White House and the US State Department have not yet commented on this decision.
