Taiwan Braces for Impact of Mainland Haze on New Year’s Eve

環境部今天指出,中國大陸北京到上海地區昨天出現霾害現象,根據空氣品質監測、中央氣象署預報等資料,31日白天起東北季風將增強,境外污染物恐伴隨東北季風增強南下影響台灣空氣quality.

The Ministry of Environment stated that haze damage from mainland China from Beijing to Shanghai will arrive in Taiwan on the 31st. Air quality across Taiwan is mostly at the orange alert level, and may reach 55 to 65 micrograms/cubic meter in the northern region.

Xie Binghui, director of the Monitoring Information Department of the Ministry of Environment, told the Central News Agency that according to monitoring data, the hourly concentration of fine suspended particulate matter (PM2.5) in Shanghai, China, was observed yesterday to be about 150 to 250 micrograms/cubic meter. The monsoon intensifies and moves southward.

Xie Binghui said that monitoring shows that the hourly concentration of PM2.5 in the northern region may reach 55 to 65 micrograms/cubic meter. Overseas pollutants will also continue to move southward with the northeasterly winds. The air quality across Taiwan is mostly orange alert level.

Xie Binghui also mentioned that from noon on January 1, 2020, the concentration of overseas influences will slow down and horizontal diffusion conditions will be good. The air quality in the north of the central region will gradually improve, but the southern region is located downwind and must still pay attention to the accumulation of pollutants.

In response to the possible impact of overseas pollution on air quality, the Ministry of Environment not only coordinates in advance with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and relevant coal-fired power plants such as Taipower to reduce load and emissions, but also reminds local governments to pay attention to changes in air quality at any time, and will initiate early warning and contingency measures in a timely manner, including strengthening Load reduction and emission reduction in large factories, dust control at construction sites and storage yards, open-air burning inspections, and highly polluting vehicle inspections. In addition, the environmental protection and river authorities in Yunlin, Kaohsiung, Pingtung and other places were notified at the same time to prepare in advance for the suppression of river dust to mitigate the impact of deteriorating air quality.
