Taipei Mayor Accuses Beijing Prosecutor of Interfering in Election

2023-12-19 00:32 Lianhe Daily Lianhe Daily Black and White Collection Taipei Mayor Chiang Wanan (third from right) questioned and criticized the Beijing prosecutor’s interview with the mayor of the city, creating a chilling effect and judicial investigation to intervene in the election. …

There have been cases in northern counties and cities in which village chiefs organized groups to go to the mainland and were investigated by the District Prosecutor’s Office under the Anti-Infiltration Act after returning to Taiwan. Taipei City investigated and prosecuted 41 village chiefs in one go, a considerable number. The relevant director was not only interviewed, but also searched and detained. But is the problem really that serious?

The head of the village who was accused of involving the “Anti-infiltration Law” was charged with the following crimes: first, “price unequal” for traveling to the mainland; second, “being publicized” during the itinerary, such as the First Central China and the 1992 Consensus. However, the local leader organized a group to go to the mainland, and part of the trip, whether at his own expense or not, was not an exception. When cross-strait exchanges are frequent, similar groups visit each other in an endless stream. Comparing the past and the present, the only difference is that the DPP was in power and cross-strait exchanges were almost at a standstill, so the “Li Chang Tuan” seemed abrupt.

After the “Anti-Infiltration Law” was enacted, all transactions with the other side of the Taiwan Strait, regardless of whether they have official contact or not, will be more likely to be criminalized. What used to be “exchange” has become “infiltration” under the anti-China banner of the Democratic Progressive Party. What is even more ridiculous is that the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus have also become grounds for criminalization. But the United States also adheres to “One China”. Is it illegal to go to the United States for exchanges?

The mainland’s united war against Taiwan has indeed never stopped. However, under the Tsai administration, the “loss of self-confidence syndrome” has been unprecedented. Using Douyin or Xiaohongshu can lead to a national security crisis; if a local director visits the mainland, he or she will be infiltrated. Therefore, strengthening the control of speech and personal freedom has become the focus of the DPP’s governance. Let me ask, how is this different from the other side?

Investigating and prosecuting village chiefs is actually part of the DPP’s election strategy. The first is to scare the monkeys, the second is to demonize cross-strait exchanges, and the third is to take the opportunity to attack the blue camp. The DPP has no construction card to play, so it has no choice but to play the “anti-Chinese card” until it breaks.
