Tailor-made start to the season | Handball

The first ten minutes of the new Quickline Handball League season belonged to the guests from Bern. After Marvin Lier took the lead, the cadets made a few mistakes. The guests took full advantage of this and went 5:1 ahead in the 9th minute. Supported by a small but loud group of fans, the Bernese showed that they were willing to challenge the reigning Swiss champions. The cadets had to survive seven goalless minutes before it was Lier who again brought the necessary momentum to the Oranges’ game with two goals for his team. Now all the players were definitely shaken up. A brilliant save by Best Player Julien Meyer and goals by Odinn Thor Rikhardsson and returning player Lucas Meister brought the equalizer for the home team. Just one minute later, Patrik Martinovic put the cadets back in the lead. The initial nervousness was gone and the cadets did not let the lead slip away. Within four minutes of play, they had managed to turn the game in their favor. By halftime, the cadets had increased their lead to 16:13.

After the break, Mehdi Ben Romdhane increased the lead to plus four and a brilliant Meyer in goal for the cadets drove the opposition to despair with a double save. The cadets’ improved defensive performance enabled the attackers to score easy goals again and again. New signing Kassem Awad analysed the game after the end of the game: “We played well in defence from the end of the first half and were able to score a few goals. This made the game a little easier for us.” Awad himself contributed five goals from as many attempts to the victory. The two wingers Rikhardsson with six and Lier with seven were even more accurate. After a long injury break, Donat Bartok also impressed with four impressive goals. Coach Hrvoje Horvat was also happy with his team’s performance: “I am satisfied with the two wins against Kriens in the Supercup and against Bern. The boys are doing their best after the tough preparation and the most important thing is that nobody is injured. Our goal is to improve from game to game.”

The next opportunity for the cadets is next Wednesday, September 4th, when they will play away against Pfadi Winterthur. The next home game will be on Wednesday, September 11th, against HC Kriens-Luzern. Kick-off is at 6:45 p.m.
