Tahiti surf finals postponed in anticipation of bigger waves

Teahupo’o, Tahiti. The surfing finals for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games have been postponed until Sunday afternoon in Tahiti due to unfavourable conditions with small waves, making Monday now the likely last day of competition.

Throughout the competition, forecasters have been on the lookout for the best waves for the final day of surfing, which is due to end by Monday at the latest.

The surf forecast is the biggest determinant of when the Olympic surfing competition will take place, followed by wave angle and size. Only four days out of a ten-day window will be allotted for the competition, so it is important to choose the days that might be best.

While Teahupo’o is a town famous for its big, heavy barrel-shaped waves, conditions during Olympic competition have ranged from iconically huge to disappointing, leading to delays in the competition window.

Technical delegates were expected to make a decision on the next likely date late Sunday afternoon in Tahiti.

It was the second day in a row that the competition had been postponed, after defending Olympic women’s surfing champion Clarissa Moore of the United States was defeated in the quarterfinals.

On Thursday, waves were steady, but included fewer of the large barrels seen earlier in the week.

The next day of activity will decide which athletes will take home the medals. In the quarter-finals, each heat will feature two semi-finals of surfers who will compete to advance to the gold medal heat. The losers of the two semi-final heats will compete for the bronze medal.
