Participants who slept less than five hours or more than nine hours per night were also at risk, as were participants who took unplanned naps, an hour or longer. The more symptoms of disordered sleep the individual had, the greater their risk of stroke. Management of sleep disturbance could have a positive impact on patients’ quality of life but further interventional studies are needed for diagnosis and treatment.
