Two cases, in which infants developed microcephaly and neurological issues ― and which were found to have occurred due to inflammation to the placentas ― were documented in Pediatrics. Researchers pointed out the placentas didn’t appear to work as they should have and had signs of inflammation; and while neither infant tested positive for the virus, researchers suspected the SARS-CoV-2 may have crossed the placenta. Pregnant women are at much higher risk of being severely impacted by COVID-19.
