Covid-19 can infect the placenta and cause brain damage to newborns, according to a study by the University of Miami, which confirmed two cases of seizures and development delays in babies born to young mothers who had tested positive to the Delta variant in 2020. One of the babies died aged 13 months while the other was placed in hospice care. The virus had likely transferred from the mother to the baby, the study said. The condition may be rare, but women who were infected during their pregnancies should inform paediatricians to check for developmental delays, said Dr Shahnaz Duara.
