“Taboo Names for Girls in Rus’: The Sacred Meaning Behind the Prohibited Names”

Some advice is not always worth listening to.

The inhabitants of Rus’ betrayed the sacred meaning of the name of the baby. The ancestors knew everything about how it is necessary and how categorically it is impossible to call a child. The proverb about the ship, which you call it, so it will sail, the Slavs perceived as a guide to action.

There was even a certain “stop list” of names that were strictly forbidden to call girls. The babies so named were doomed to curses and an unhappy life. By the way, the list also included names that are very common for modern reality.

For example, it was forbidden to call girls Tatyana. A beautiful and simple Russian name was considered a real taboo. To name a child like that is to doom him to lifelong failures and hardships.

The veto was also imposed on the name of Lada. Worse, the name could not even be said in vain. It was considered non-Christian, and everything pagan in Rus’ in the Middle Ages was already avoided.

There were almost no barbarians in Rus’. It was believed that this name is synonymous with a difficult fate and a terrible fate for a girl. Now, of course, these prejudices are in the past, but many superstitious parents still blindly follow outdated traditions.
