European Table Tennis Championships: Kaufmann secures bronze

“Frequent player” Annett Kaufmann crowned the first major appearance of the German table tennis aces at the European Championships in Linz by jumping into the medal ranks in mixed doubles. In the shadow of four successes by the 18-year-old Olympic discovery, defending champion Dang Qiu, veteran Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Co. recorded a good opening record with 16 wins in 19 games at the start of the four remaining competitions in the first top event after the “Timo Boll era”. .

Kaufmann is in the semi-finals in Austria together with Patrick Franziska in the mixed doubles after two more victories and is therefore at least assured of bronze. The German champion and her experienced partner want to further refine their first European Championship individual medal in the adult division against the local duo Daniel Habesohn/Sofia Polcanova on Friday (12.30 p.m.). The playful and tactically sophisticated left-hander also held her own in her first matches in singles and doubles with European Championship runner-up Nina Mittelham.

Top German quartet moves into the 2nd individual round

This also applied to the rest of the DTTB squad on Thursday. Led by Qiu and the two-time European Championship title winner Ovtcharov, the top quartet of men’s national coach Jörg Roßkopf and, surprisingly, wildcard starter and youth champion Andre Bertelsmeier made it into the second individual round.

In the women’s tournament without the injured world-class defender Ying Han and the paused Olympic participant Xiaona Shan, four other DTTB players are fighting for a place in the round of 16 alongside Kaufmann. High-flyer Kaufmann is challenging top seed Bernadette Szöcs from Romania, twelfth in the world rankings. In the doubles competition, in addition to Kaufmann/Mittelham, the three other DTTB combinations also reached the round of the best 16.

As expected, several German talents had to pay their dues after pleasingly positive qualifying competitions. However, the first-round defeats in the singles for Mia Griesel and Sophia Klee as well as for the duo Bertelsmeier/Griesel in the mixed round of 16 remained the only “crossed out results” for the DTTB team on Thursday.
