Tabárez sacked as head coach of Uruguay | Free press

Montevideo (dpa) – In view of the endangered qualification for the World Cup in Qatar, Uruguay’s football association (AUF) has parted with veteran coach Óscar Tabárez.

The executive committee has decided to end the contract with Tabárez and other members of the coaching staff, it said in an OPEN statement.

The 74-year-old coached Uruguay at the past three World Cups. He led the Uruguayan national team in South Africa 2010 to fourth place. In 2011 Uruguay won the Copa America with Tabarez. Tabarez had previously worked as a Uruguayan national coach from 1988 to 1990.

The world champion of 1930 and 1950 is currently worried after several defeats in qualifying in South America, most recently against Bolivia and Argentina, among others, and is only seventh in the table. The fourth place entitles to direct qualification.
