T-Mobile investigates claim of data theft of 100 million US customers – Computer – News

T-Mobile is investigating the claim of a hacker who claims to have access to customer data of a hundred million Americans who are or have been customers of the provider. The hacker is currently selling the data.

The data would come from servers of T-Mobile, this is what Motherboard heard from the hacker. The data includes names, addresses, telephone numbers, IMEI numbers of telephones, the American counterpart of social security numbers and data about driving licenses. Motherboard was able to determine on the basis of a sample that it contains data from T-Mobile customers.

According to the hacker, T-Mobile was aware that the servers had been broken into and access has been closed. He already had the data by then. He asks 6 bitcoins, currently converted about 240,000 euros, for part of the data via a forum. T-Mobile says in a response to the site to investigate the claim. Furthermore, the provider has nothing to report about the case and the provider does not answer follow-up questions. The chance that data from many Dutch customers is included is probably nil, because the American branch uses separate systems and servers.
