“I have never experienced similar feelings. Everyone is laughing, people are happy about our success. But it also belongs to them. We couldn’t do it without them. I’m proud of both the team and the fans,” grinned Szoboszlai.
It was thanks to his warm relationship with the fans that he indulged himself in a toast right in the stands right after the match. Which, of course, was also caught on camera, Szoboszlai immediately became an internet hit.
Rather than a joint celebration, however, he pleased with a great performance on the field and two goals in a short time sequence, with which he turned the course of the match. Advancement to the EURO was already guaranteed for the Hungarians after the previous 2:2 draw with Bulgaria, but thanks to the triumph over Montenegro, they could rejoice at the first place in the group. And that regardless of the result of the simultaneously played duel between Serbia and the Bulgarians.
Hungary is applying for the role of the dark horse of the championship in Germany, which will be held next year. The last time they experienced the unpleasant aftertaste of defeat was in September of last year, when they lost 0:2 to Italy. Since? Twelve games, seven wins and five draws. A decent balance…
“I don’t know how long our invincibility will last. But I can promise that we will do everything to make it last as long as possible,” Szoboszlai breathed. The attacking midfielder, defending the colors of English Liverpool on the club scene, paid for the national team’s mover during the successful qualification. He scored four goals and the same number of assists in eight games. Enthusiastic teammates found only words of praise for him.
“We all know that Dominik is a fantastic footballer. After all, he plays for one of the best teams in England,” said his colleague Botond Balogh in front of Szoboszlai. “Although we are not strong only because of individuals, he really belongs to the world class.”
The 23-year-old midfielder also had a hand in Hungary’s third goal. In the set time, his pumice stone from a free kick was headed only by the goalkeeper to Ádam Nagy, who made no mistake from close range. “I was lucky that the ball reached me, but Dominik hit it very nicely. He decided the whole match,” acknowledged the satisfied scorer.
Together with the Hungarians, the other Serbians also fought their way to the EURO from Group G. Their opponents from the qualification, i.e. Montenegro, Bulgaria and Lithuania, on the other hand, will not even look at the playoffs, so they can forget about participating in the championship in Germany.
