The Stichting Staatsziekenfonds (SZF) has used the premium, which was intended for medical care and medicines, to buy houses for high prices. Surinamese president Chan Santokhi announced this on Saturday.
Santokhi was a guest at a program on RBN television, where he discussed various current issues that play a role in society. An extensive report of the interview with Santokhi will be published in Dagblad Suriname on Monday.
The president of Suriname emphasized that the SZF is a State Health Fund. “You will be shocked if I give this information. You pay a premium and the SZF must use that money to ensure that you receive medical care and medicines. However, the SZF has started to buy houses with the money for large amounts, ”said Santokhi.
Just before the 2015 parliamentary elections, Ricky Kromodihardjo was appointed the new director of SZF; he was a candidate for the NDP during the elections, but immediately afterwards retired from the National Assembly in order to remain as director.
He succeeded Acting Director Stephen Comvalius, who had been fired by the Supervisory Board six months earlier. A few months after the Santokhi cabinet took office, Kromodihardjo was succeeded in October 2020 by Amar Randjitsing.
