Szczesny retires from football: ‘I gave it my all’

Wojcech Szczesny is retiring from football. As anticipated by Repubblica, the Polish goalkeeper has decided to hang up his gloves after terminating his contract with Juventus, putting an end to a career studded with successes and in which he managed to earn the professional and human esteem of the football world and beyond. After starting out at Arsenal in 2006, Szczesny landed in the Italian championship, first wearing the jersey of Roma, then that of Juventus, sharing the goal with champions such as Buffon and Alisson.

The balance of his career

In the long post published on Instagram, Szczesny recounted his career, his dreams and his hopes, taking stock of his professional journey: “I have not only achieved my dreams, I have arrived where my imagination would not dare to take me. I have played the game at the highest level with the best players in history without ever feeling inferior. I have made friends for life, created imperishable memories and met people who have had an incredible impact on my life. Everything I have and everything I am I owe to the beautiful game of football. But I have also given the game everything I had. I have given the game 18 years of my life, every day, without excuses. Today, my body still feels ready for challenges, my heart no longer.

I feel that now is the time to devote all my attention to my family – my amazing wife Marina and our two beautiful children Liam and Noelia. Therefore I have decided to retire from professional football. The end of a journey is a time for reflection and gratitude. There are a lot of people I should thank at this point but I will try to do it personally with each of them. But to you, the fans I owe a special thank you for being on this journey with me. For the support and criticism, for the love and hate, for being the most beautiful and romantic part of football. Without you none of this would make sense! Thank you!”.
