SZ column “Best things”: New York has a bird – panorama

King Kong hanging from a skyscraper with a blonde? An asteroid that inevitably hurtles towards the center of the city? Or an elderly gentleman with an orange face and flowing hair, who from his own tower proclaims himself ruler of the whole country? Hardly anything crazy would have really surprised New York in 2020.

So it was all the more surprising that on Thursday in the West Chelsea district, numerous people suddenly gathered – at least with a safe distance – and stared at the sky with huge lenses, high-end cameras and binoculars. No, no celebrities were to be seen as usual in West 22nd Street, the street that leads from the Flatiron Building towards the Highline, also no giant gorilla, no heavenly body and no Trump.

The lapwing simply had: a bird. Amazing, very great and absolutely fantastic was that – because the yellow-red pine tangar, called Western Tanager in the local language, which sat in a treetop between the few remaining leaves, can be seen almost less often in the metropolis than King Kong at the skyscraper. For the first time in four years she was sighted in New York, reports an ornithologist. After all, the Western Tanager lives in mountainous mixed forests, and spends the winter in the eucalyptus forests of warm California. A real bird of paradise. Just the right amount of madness that New Yorkers need right now.
