Nightdive’s System Shock is getting its biggest update to date, including a tweaked ending, hacker gender selection, additional waypoints and more. The update will be released on April 11.
Let’s start with Lady Hacker since she seems to be the feature that has been in development the longest. Although the change includes a complete model overhaul and new voice-over sounds, there will be little difference in the game given that System Shock is entirely in first person and the Hacker is a silent protagonist: you only see him from afar at the beginning and end of cutscenes , as well as the game’s iconic, grisly scene.
Nightdive Business Development Director Larry Cooperman was coy about what the “updated ending” to 1.2 entails, but they said it’s “worth replaying” for. The developers acknowledged that the move was in response to criticism of the game’s original final boss, a virtual reality puzzle and shooter section with mechanics different from System Shock’s usual immersive gameplay, as well as other sections throughout the campaign.
