SYRIZA: Time for Kasselaki – The big decision of the Central Committee –

SYRIZA is on the brink. Just before the extraordinary meeting of the Central Committee, the internal party camps of the official opposition are on a war footing. Now each possibility accumulates its own verification probabilities at the end of the process.

The Political Secretariat did not back down from the initial decision to properly convene the higher body, even though the external court to Koumoundourou – which had already been returned as inadmissible – was subsequently withdrawn. Within the next few hours, the “opinion” for Stefanos Kasselakis will become known, who is charged with a superficial and pretentious retreat so that he has an alibi to appear.

Recommendation to the members of the KE was preferred not to be included in the decision of the PG. However, the fact that the issue will be raised in an open dialogue is out of the blue, because the candidacy of the former president is considered by his internal party opponents as not meeting the criterion of full acceptance of the collective decisions.

As it turns out, there are three versions:

  • to be referred to the Ethics Committee with the question of deletion.
  • to block his candidacy for the presidency.
  • not to suffer any sanction.

In all scenarios a majority of the members present must be gathered. That is, exactly the bet that each of the main blocks of the frontal conflict wants to win.

Sources typically estimated that the interview of St. Kasselakis in “Enopios Enopio” by Nikos Hadjinikolaus could be redemptive for SYRIZA. As a restart with a simultaneous ceasefire.

Instead, he is accused by the group of 87 of having polarized the climate even more with his words, given that he defined himself as “de facto and de jure president”. Something that even in the posting of the extrajudicial revocation he avoided revoking.

In this case, the anger of top officials was inevitable. They stood by the fact that the 36-year-old politician still does not show respect to the institutions, putting forward the base as a permanent excuse.

“The base did not elect Kasselakis as king”

“Can we take part in elections while sending extrajudicial speeches and talking about a party we don’t like?” one of the presidential candidates, Sokratis Famellos, had asked in advance.

He received the answer from Kostas Zachariadis. “Someone who does not respect the principles, the values, threatens it with lawsuits and with a prosecutor cannot be president of a party,” he responded.

“He still says he’s president,” Olga Gerovasili rightly asserted. The vice-president of the Parliament was also her, who, without naming her, later received most of the arrows of St. Kasselakis.

“The base elected him as president, not as king,” Giorgos Vassiliadis added, describing a man who “ignores everyone and everything” and lies about the constitutional changes he was trying to pass.

Quorum and majority

From the above it is understood that “87” is impossible to coexist with Stefanos Kasselakis despite the step back. That’s why they insist that he be put out of the race.

These days they are organizing nationwide in order to ensure the presence of as many of their “own” members as possible in the KE. Or convince others to follow them. They seek on the one hand to achieve a quorum (148+) and on the other hand to keep the majority.

A week ago the hall was half empty, something they would not want to happen again. It was for this reason that the idea of online participation in the meeting was discussed, without being approved. The proposal was submitted to the PG by Katerina Notopoulou in order to avoid a new financial burden on those who live outside of Attica. Be that as it may, the majority of those who were absent for various reasons the previous Saturday will be present.

How will the “Kasselakiki” react

On the other hand, the Kasselaki wing with dozens of members is interested in how to prevent a new rival “victory”, denouncing the “nomenclature and bureaucracy” of SYRIZA. The possibility of a boycott has not been ruled out by specific subgroups. That is, to be at the hotel, but not even enter the room for the meeting with the aim of preventing the required quorum.

Some “hardliners” insist on even more dynamic mobilizations in defense of St. Kasselakis. At the same time, however, experienced executives express their preference for a confrontation within KE, prioritizing politics over protests. They want to convince that the attempt to exclude Kasselakis from the elections will turn “boomerang” for everyone from the moment the extraordinary Congress approves or rejects the nominations.

The central protagonist of the “SYRIZA tragedy” himself is not going to appear and speak as a presidential candidate. He clarified it himself, confirming the report of Vimas a few days ago. After all, it was expressed by his aggressive post, so it affects the balances from a distance.

The votes and “the beginning of the end”

As previous pivotal votes have shown, the bloc of 87 is powerful and, purely or marginally, determines developments. However, since the Polakis group is not expected to support any proposal to exclude St. Kasselakis from the electoral process, the “lost” votes are being sought.

The absence of Polakis

Pavlos Polakis has long held the role of “peacemaker” in the proceedings, trying to smooth the tension with “Solomontian solutions”. The withdrawal of the extrajudicial is not bad to give him some credit, because he fought a lot in this direction. Now he has no reason to discuss the possibility of sanctions against Stefanos Kasselakis. “I want to defeat them”, as he says, not to exterminate them.

Both the white he chose in the PG and his absence from today’s meeting, due to his planned pre-election appearances in Crete (Sunday and Monday), also reflect his desire to stay away from the frontal conflict. He himself will wait for what will happen in order to position himself.

The influencing member group within the JV is estimated to be most likely to adopt the same line. The extrajudicial was a “red line” that no longer exists.

Papa’s attitude

At the same time, Nikos Pappas made sure to constantly promote unity as a priority. After all, his role in the party is institutional. Recognizing that the extrajudicial was an extreme act he did not seem prepared to legalize it. After the tactical movement of St. Kasselakis, will show with his speech how he will move.

And if Theodora Tzakri hinted that the president of the KO has been seduced and joined the “anti-Casselian” wing, calling on him and others to respect their course and reputation, the truth is far from the truth. It’s just that N. Pappas prefers to face the reality of the moment. As well as those who move in its environment.

Lifetime membership only

It has its significance for the turn of events, that if a quorum is reached, any proposal will have to gather a majority of those present, as remote participation, nor telephone voting, has proceeded.

If this Central Committee “will be the beginning of the end of SYRIZA in a united form” as predicted by the experienced Panos Skorinis, it will be proven in the final count.
