A question to the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis, and Environment & Energy, Theodoros Skylakakis, on the subject of “Bracho islands in the Aegean without EEZ & continental shelf” was submitted by 21 SYRIZA MPs.
The initiative was taken by the head of external affairs, Rena Dourou.
As it is complained about, “the government selects and proposes the new Special Spatial Plan for Tourism, promoting the ‘graying’ of certain areas” at the same time that “Turkey systematically continues its challenges”.
SYRIZA notes that “according to the proposed Plan posted for consultation, the ban on tourist development on Greek islands, including uninhabited islands and islets without economic activity infrastructure (no. 5)” is foreseen.
According to the official opposition, it is known that “the absence of economic activity on an island or micro-island entails the loss of its rights to the EEZ and continental shelf”, with the consequence that Greece’s sovereign rights in these areas are threatened with weakening.
That is why the relevant ministers are being asked if they “will take responsibility for adopting this specific regulation, thus creating the conditions for the weakening of our country’s sovereign rights (loss of rights to EEZ and continental shelf) on islands and islets of the Eastern Aegean, in view of the of possible negotiations with Turkey for the delimitation of the EEZ and continental shelf in the Aegean”.
