SYRIZA: The government denies Greece’s leading role in humanitarian initiatives – 2024-03-10 00:48:37

THE SYRIZA – PSwelcomes the Joint Declaration of the European Commission – the Republic of Cyprus – the United States of America – the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom, regarding the opening of a sea corridor for the transfer of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

This development, albeit with a significant delay resulting in a heavy cost in human lives, is a positive step towards an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, addressing the humanitarian crisis, the return of the Israeli hostages and the immediate resumption of credible talks for the Palestinian one, based on the 1967 borders, for a solution of two states that coexist peacefully, with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.

In said announcement, it is stated, among other things, that together with the above countries, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany “announce their intention” to open the corridor in question, without mentioning any further participation of our country in the this important initiative.

The Mitsotakis government once again denies the leading role of Greece in humanitarian initiatives and in efforts to de-escalate and resolve crises, remaining faithful to the doctrine of the “given ally” and the I.H. opaque foreign policy Mitsotakis. Instead, the government is content only with irresponsible policies and communication fireworks, attempting to create an international profile for the Prime Minister in his attempt not to account for his government’s actions on a number of issues, with the rule of law as the crown jewel.

Abandoning the multidimensional active foreign policy of our country, as it was implemented during the SYRIZA-PS government period, endangers national interests and harms our country’s status as a reliable interlocutor in the wider region. We therefore call on Mr. Mitsotakis and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Gerapetritis, to clarify the participation of our country in this initiative, as well as the reasons why Greek participation is not of a strategic nature, in contrast to the participation of of the Republic of Cyprus”.
