Armistice, compromise or good faith, the conclusion after what preceded the crucial meeting of the Political Secretariat of SYRIZA, from the afternoon to midnight on Tuesday (20/2), was in the end the mutual and on both sides effort of the president and executives to go without (big) cracks in the 4th Congress which starts tomorrow Thursday (22/2).
Why was the issue of presidential elections not raised?
In fact, as confirmed by his environment, Stefanos Kasselakis raised the dilemma of reconfirming the members in his person or resorting to a new internal party process to elect a president from the base of the party. He had no intention of giving up the fight after just five months.
However, the opinion prevailed that at this stage there is no reason to enter into such a significant stake now, because such a development would inevitably widen even more the already great cycle of introversion that plagues SYRIZA. According to Koumoundourou sources, there was even a consensus of support and confirmation of confidence in the president in order for the faction to enter the European elections in June in an orderly manner. Just as it was reflected in the double update of the instrument, with a difference of a few hours.
How misunderstandings were resolved
In a meeting that lasted almost five hours, a dialogue clearly developed in the room. St. Kasselakis has heard a lot of objections and criticism about the content, the way and the time he has chosen to raise a number of issues so far, and he showed that he realizes among other mistakes that the style of his recent letter to the PG was at least excessive.
On the other hand, of course, he himself, in order to take back the expressions, asked to stop the leaks, mainly malicious obviously, which for him is a major issue of the functioning of the party. He also called on everyone to make the meetings, which have increased anyway, more productive.
That is why both he as head and finally the Political Secretariat on the other hand retracted what had been communicated through the aggressive letter on the one hand and the decision issued on Monday on the other in order to remove the misunderstandings that had arisen. It was simply not deemed necessary to officially communicate such a thing, since it was a purely internal party process that was accepted by all.
Tebonera’s intervention
At that point, Dionysis Teboneras chose – the accusations are true – to raise the issue of a statutory procedure, of which he has always been a supporter, urging the members of the PG to vote on the revocation or not of the Kasselakis letter.
The president reacted to this request of the Father’s labor expert and denied such a possibility, even at the moment when a common ground had been found, before the rest of the executives expressed themselves in favor of a softer management of the situation – especially now that the conference is coming.
Not in images of yuchaism
After all, the ultimate goal turned out to be – as it finally became clear at the end of the process – was to lower the tone as much as possible and that SYRIZA would not be led divided, but united to the 4th Congress. It is not in anyone’s interest to see “images of cynicism and senseless tensions” appear here and there, as a source from Koumoundourou told Vima. At this point in time “no one wants this for anyone”, he characteristically added.
D. Teboneras finally left, before the mutual trust between the president and the Political Secretariat was communicated and that the Conference would be held, exclusively, on the basis of the positions developed in the previous dialogue – in other words, no other issue would be raised, since it is not going to be for statute.
