SYRIZA: One step before losing the official opposition after the independence of the 4 –

Petros Pappas sent a letter to the president of the Parliament, announcing his independence from SYRIZA, something Kyriaki Malama, Alexandros Avlonitis and Rallia Christidou will also do. Now, the departure of one more MP from KO is enough for PASOK to assume the role of official opposition.

The new split that took place during the conference at Gazi Live sets new standards (in the already unprecedented for post-revolutionary annals) political scene. The departure of the four MPs who will be added to the independent MPs as of Monday results in SYRIZA having 31 MPs, the same number as PASOK.

The (for now) maintenance of the official opposition position lies in the provision of the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament (general article 19) that in case of an equal number of MPs, then this role is played by the party that gathered the most votes.

However, there are several members of the KO of SYRIZA who strongly flirt with the idea of independence, which will automatically give the reins of the opposition to PASOK. That is why the decision has great weight, since it undoubtedly has historical dimensions due to both the political stigma and the lack of a similar precedent.

Who are with one foot out?

Given the departure of Stefanos Kasselakis from SYRIZA and the founding of a new party, the question arises as to what will happen next to Giorgos Gavrilos, Theodora Tzakris, Nina Kassimatis, Iotas Poulos, Vassilis Kokkalis, Yiannis Sarakiotis, Elena Akrita and Evangelos Apostolakis.

Each and every one of them will not follow the same path. For example, the departure of Th. Tzakri seems more likely due to the absolute identification with St. Kasselakis and taking on a role instead all this time in the tense internal party procedures.

The attitude of N. Kassimatis, El. Akrita and Mr. Apostolaki, while – according to the information – G. Gavrilos, G. Sarakiotis and G. Pavlou will resign from their duties within the KO without becoming independent, with V. Kokkalis appearing troubled by the developments without, however, to have decided what to do.

The next day

Many predict that the next day in Koumoundourou (especially in the scenario of losing the official opposition title) will bring to the fore the need to re-approach the MPs who left the party due to the head-on conflict with St. Kasselakis and formed the New Left.

It is a very difficult undertaking, with several executives here and there showing up adamantly, but the personal feuds, disagreements and fierce conflicts of the past could be put aside once St. Kasselakis is a thing of the past for SYRIZA and political survival is reduced to a key issue for the area of the renewal left.

Will Tsipras speak?

It is already rumored that an intervention by Alexis Tsipras is imminent against the background of the rapid developments, with the majority officials pleading ignorance of the intentions of the former prime minister, who also stayed away from these conference proceedings, while his associates we contacted reserved themselves to answer.
