The tightrope on which SYRIZA is walking has reached its limits and 48 hours before the start of the extraordinary conference the developments are completely unpredictable. The meeting of the Political Secretariat, on Wednesday afternoon (6/11), indicated the guidelines (hybrid format, electronic voting) and ruled out any reversal with a floating postponement of the supreme body. On the contrary, as it was underlined in all directions, SYRIZA “progresses organized, democratic, decisively”.
“No plan that deviates from the observance of its statutory provisions and the decisions of the Central Committee, no plan that serves the dissolution and obsolescence from within, is going to thrive,” the PG said in its decision targeting the other side.
He even judged that “the anti-gatherings, as announced today with public statements, belong, as methods, to the opponents and opponents of the Left” and “will not achieve their goal”. And this is because “SYRIZA-PS will protect both the democratic processes and its members and, above all, its history and future”.
The Political Secretariat recommended, with a clear edge to Stefanos Kasselakis and his associates “not to hypocritically invoke Democracy in the party” those who created parallel structures, with a register of members and a separate building, sent extrajudicial letters to SYRIZA-PS and its executives, indulge constantly in slander and use expressions such as “hoods”, “coup”, etc.
“Reports of foreclosures are false”
It is the verdict of the executive body that “all the prescribed procedures in relation to the Congress and the nomination of its representatives” are strictly observed.
“Reports on exclusions are fraudulent” it was pointed out, since these are procedures “that apply to every Congress under the responsibility of the Legalization Committee”. It is, after all, “absolutely necessary to check the correct observance of electoral conditions and procedures (such as the equal representation of the sexes, the prescribed number of elected representatives per OM, the observance of the number of preference crosses per ballot, the integrity of the procedure, etc.), as defined by the EFTA circulars and the decisions of the Council of Ministers, as well as the examination of relevant objections”.
“We are sending a message of determination and unity to the members, the executives and the delegates” the PG also said, seeking the conference to be “a great democratic process, which will lead to the reconstruction and strengthening of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance”.
For the majority, as expressed in the decision, “the discrediting of the party is Mr. Mitsotakis and the centers that stand by his side and against the people’s needs”. That is why “the next day will find all of us, through the lines of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, in the defense of social assets, public goods, and Democracy. He will find us in the battle of the necessary progressive change, he will find us guarantors of the implementation of a strong program of restructuring society and the economy”.
Rena Dourou, Panos Rigas, Olympia Teligioridou and Nikos Skorinis were drawn only with the polar part of the decision and differentiated themselves, keeping their distance, throughout the rest.
Confrontation between Tzakris and Gerovasilis
Until, of course, the announcement was issued, another intense meeting of the members of the body took place.
Theodora Tzakri, the “voice” of St. Kasselakis in the PG, repeated the request of the former president for the resignation of the secretary Rania Svigou, but also of Eleni Symeonidou (member of the PG and the Organization) on the grounds of violation of “political and official duty” following a complaint by the manager of isyriza (who the secretary had already denied). MP Pellas insisted on the allegation of undermining “the electoral process through the deliberate obstruction of operation” of the party’s platform and called for a roll call vote to remove both.
“It is not an emergency court-martial”
Also Ms. Tzakri returned to the issue of the expulsion of Thanos Moraitis and Nina Kasimatis from the Delegates’ Legalization Committee “for alleged anti-social behavior”.
“What exactly didn’t you like? Because you were caught in the act of meeting as a parasynagogue?’ he asked in a mocking tone and, speaking about the responsibilities of the committee in question, stated that “it is not an emergency court-martial”.
That is why he claimed that “all its other decisions, especially the decision to disqualify entire OM and Prefectural Committees for allegedly violating the electoral process are invalid because they are a duplication of the responsibilities of another body, the Ethics Committee.”
At the end, Theodora Tzakri asked for answers about the results of the elections as well as the time of the start of the work, because “we are two days before the conference” and they have not been informed which delegates have been elected so that they can prepare their descent to Athens”.
“You shouldn’t be a member with all the insults you’ve unleashed”
Olga Gerovasili wanted to contradict what Mrs. Tzakri citing the term “bureaucracy” that she often uses in her statements.
“You who are a member of the same body are or are you not a bureaucracy?” the deputy speaker of the Parliament reportedly asked, then answering that “since you claim to be a member of the elected Political Secretariat, like us, you have no right to target all of us horizontally nor to insult and target the also elected secretary of the party and Eleni Symeonidou , also an elected member of the Political Secretariat”.
“If this could be done institutionally, the first person who should not be a member here is you with all the insults you have unleashed all this time” concluded Mrs. Gerobasili.
“The Kasselakis side has degenerated the process”
For her part, Katerina Notopoulou wrote with the point of view of protecting SYRIZA, considering that “Kasselakis’ exhortation to counter-consolidations proves that he is trying to blow up the democratic process”.
By extension, it is the duty of the elected bodies to guarantee “the safety of the delegates”, as “the Kasselakis side with Trumpian methods has degenerated the process, presents fake news as reality & runs a campaign based on lies”.
Famellos requested an appointment of candidates
According to Sokratis Famellos, one way to shield the defense of SYRIZA is a single line of presidential candidates.
From western Greece who is continuing his tour – on Wednesday (6/11) he was in Corfu, the Member of Parliament B’ Thessaloniki (who is not a member of the PG) took the initiative to request a meeting of all contenders for the leadership with the consent of Political Secretariat.
According to information, he contacted the secretary Rania Svigou and asked her to convey to the members of the body the proposal for an official meeting with Pavlos Polakis, Nikolas Faradouris and Apostolos Gletsos. This will be attended by both herself and the president of KO, Nikos Pappas and the head of the Eurogroup, Costas Arvanitis.
As explained by colleagues of Mr. Famellou, he submitted this request with the aim on the one hand “to declare the unity and protection of the party in the attack it is receiving” and on the other “to find a way out that we will all serve together in the future”.
Because SYRIZA has really reached an impasse.
