For a long time, the president of SYRIZA did not rule out such a possibility, in fact waiting for the appointment of an opponent by the opposition. But it seems that he yielded to the pressure of his associates so that he would not be dragged directly into this process and referred the dissidents to the October Congress. Where he believes he has the upper hand, controlling a large part of the party’s base, as was evident in February.
Immediately after the start of the meeting of the Political Secretariat, Pavlos Polakis and Olga Gerovasili had requested the appeal to the polls in order to avoid the submission of a motion of censure during the Central Committee that will meet at the weekend. Nevertheless, St. Kasselakis refused to call elections, accepting the request of the “anti-presidentialists”, and as everything suggests, he will now be faced with the dominant form of questioning.
For this to happen, of course, the required number of members (151) who will vote in favor must be gathered.
“The motion of censure dilutes the party”
“I consider that a motion of censure against me hurts and liquidates the party,” the leader of SYRIZA is reported to have said in his statement, insisting that such a turn “provides nothing and hurts our people as well.” It was even characterized by Stefanos Kasselakis “big ass” the request for internal party elections from the body that had already decided on a constitutional conference.
What the president of SYRIZA is now waiting for is the reaction of the opposition “blocs”, on the one hand of the 87 and on the other of Pavlos Polakis, whose executives he was pressing to commit that they will not resign and leave.
The president of the parliamentary group, Nikos Pappas, had also spoken against the appeal to the polls. After all, it was leaked by his environment from the morning that he was negative in such a scenario on the grounds that he has nothing to offer at this time.
The Political Secretariat completed its work 90 minutes after the start of the meeting. It was much shorter than other times, as nothing was discussed other than internal party issues.
