These words of Stefanos Kasselakis in his recent interview with ERT fully reflect his vision for the future of the party. As we have reported on documentonews.gr, the aim of the president of SYRIZA is to create the dominant faction in the Center-Left, but the structural changes, which he spoke about, are postponed for the autumn constitutional conference.
Despite this, Stefanos Kasselakis believes that he came out of the conference strengthened with the order to proceed with changes immediately. Already, many names have been written and heard for various positions, but nothing is certain yet.
New Political Secretariat?
There is a strong possibility that the Central Committee will convene at the weekend, which if it happens, we will know in the next few hours. There, the question of electing a new Political Secretariat is expected to be raised. Until yesterday, the possibility of filling the positions left vacant by the departures of the executives who left for the New Left was strongly discussed. Today, this scenario loses points and we are probably heading for an election of an entirely new Political Secretariat.
Before the split, the Body numbered 41 members. It now has 24. The statute does NOT state an exact number of members for the Political Secretariat, which means that the president can himself propose the optimal number, in his opinion.
Elections for the Political Secretariat are held by ballot at the Central Committee meeting and, apart from the president’s proposals (if they are made), any member of the Central Committee can nominate. Something similar had happened in the previous process with Nikos Fili, who was not in the proposals of Alexis Tsipras, but he ran for office and was elected.
Changes in faces too
The Central Committee has the possibility to elect new secretaries. According to reliable information, the deputy secretary Giorgos Vassiliadis has tendered his resignation and it is assumed by many that he will be replaced. It should be noted that the position of deputy secretary is not easy at all, as he is responsible for the Organizational Office. Also, a person is being sought for the position of press representative since the name of Dora Avgeri is playing very strongly for the European ballot. It is very difficult practically, but also morally irreconcilable, for Dora Avgeri to be a representative of the party while she is running for her pre-election campaign.
As far as the Parliamentary Group is concerned, the only thing anyone can say at the moment is that Pavlos Polakis will not retain the position of coordinator of the department heads.
New Executive Office
The decision of the conference is the creation of the Executive Office, which will be responsible for the daily monitoring of the party’s policy, while it may take decisions on matters for which it is not possible to convene the Central Committee or the Political Secretariat.
This will consist of Stefanos Kasselakis, the secretary, the deputy secretary, the press representative, the secretary of the Parliamentary Group and up to three members of the Political Secretariat.
It is considered certain that the president of the Parliamentary Group, Sokratis Famellos, will also participate, while according to information, attacks will be made on Nikos Pappas, but also on Olga Gerovassilis, as a sign of sympathy. After all, yesterday’s snapshot, where Kasselakis and Gerovasilis greeted, embraced and participated side by side in the march for the one year anniversary of the tragedy in Tempi, was not just a coincidence.
The only thing that is certain is that in the last few hours, critical meetings have been held in Koumoundourou (but also outside the building), which will continue today…
