While the large strike demonstration was going on in the center of Athens, Kostis Hatzidakis was submitting the draft budget to the Parliament. The “tsar” of the Greek economy handed the USB to the President, Konstantinos Tassoulas, and he in turn informed him that the discussion will begin on December 11.
The first reaction of SYRIZA came through the president of the parliamentary group, Nikos Pappas. Mr. Pappas participated in the mobilization on Wednesday that had been announced by GSEE – ADEDY together with several officials of the official opposition, MPs and members.
In his related statement, the president of SYRIZA’s KO said: “Today society speaks, society takes a stand. Workers are demanding raises and collective bargaining, collective agreements. At the same time, the Government submits a budget to Parliament that requests 1.5 billion more from value added tax and 1 billion more from income tax. The answer is given both in the Parliament and in the streets, for a great progressive change”.
SYRIZA: “We will highlight the lies told by the ND government”
Koumoundourou’s announcement followed a little later. According to her “Mr. Hatzidakis presented today a budget of poverty and indifference for the social majority. A budget where excess profits from taxation are acknowledged and inequalities and the state of disintegration of the welfare state are hushed up”.
“The “convenient” comparisons with 2019, all they prove is that the New Democracy received from SYRIZA an economy outside of memorandums, with resilience and full coffers, and what it has been doing for five years is redistributing income in favor of the rich, a waste party of public money to the unemployed and an extraordinary benefit policy when the results of its policies reach the social dissatisfaction over insufficient income soars’ was also pointed out.
As announced in this regard, “SYRIZA-PS both during the debate in the competent committee and in the Plenary will highlight with all its strength: the contradictions of this budget, the need for a left-wing, progressive economic governance with social convergence as its front, the strengthening the people’s income, the protection of the vulnerable, small and medium entrepreneurship and the support of the agricultural world and primary production”.
“We will highlight the lies that the ND government tells about the alleged support of public education and health, about provocative taxation and excessive profits for the strategy of selling off public property. We will talk about the reluctance to deal with profiteering and runaway inflation, uncontrollable energy costs and bank super-profits,” pledged the official opposition.
That’s why “we call on the workers, the unemployed, the social majority to resist with a broad Palladian front the economic plans of the ND that guarantee only one thing: the poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer”.
Famellos: “We are stronger when we are united”
In his own position on the strike, the candidate president Sokratis Famellos pointed out: “We unite our voices and send a resounding message of assertion and resistance. We are stronger when we are united. We are most effective when we are united. Everyone together.”
