A man armed with a knife suddenly attacked a group of preschoolers who were playing by a lake in the Alps region French. The suspect in the attack is now in custody.
Reported by Reuters, Sunday (11/6/2023) the suspect is a Syrian refugee born in 1991. Prosecutors said the suspect was now under formal investigation for attempted murder and resisted arrest with a weapon.
The suspect is said to have chosen not to speak while in police custody and when presented before a judge, prosecutors said.
He was examined by a psychiatrist who judged him fit for detention. Drug and alcohol tests were negative.
Annecy Prosecutor Line Bonnet-Mathis said in a press conference that the injured were currently no longer in critical condition. He added that the four children were still in hospital.
The attacker, dressed in black and carrying a knife about 10 centimeters (four inches) long, was heard shouting ‘in the name of Jesus Christ’ in a video taken by a bystander and seen by AFP.
The suspect was arrested at the scene in the town of Annecy following the stabbing attack at around 09.45 local time.
French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin wrote on Twitter that the stabbing suspect had been arrested thanks to the swift reaction of security forces.
