The man who stabbed children from a nursery school and adults in a park in Annecy on Thursday morning was quickly arrested. This 32-year-old man from Syria was a refugee in Sweden. A high school student filmed the arrest.
Four 3-year-old children and an adult were injured in the knife attack in a park near Lake Annecy in Haute-Savoie on Thursday morning. Two of the victims were between life and death, at the beginning of the afternoon this Thursday.
The man who attacked them was quickly arrested, his knife in hand, by the Annecy police. A high school student was able to film footage of the man walking quietly through the park after stabbing multiple victims.
This 32-year-old man is of Syrian nationality. Arrived in Sweden in 2013, he has lived there for ten years, is married to a Swedish woman and father of a 3-year-old child. Abdalmasih H. had applied for asylum in France on November 28, 2022 with the Ofpra (French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons). Since this filing, Sweden granted him refugee status on April 26, 2023.
Facing the Annecy police, the man presented himself as “a Christian from Syria”. He has not yet justified his abominable gesture during his police custody. The man was unknown to the police services in France.
Élisabeth Borne and Gérald Darmanin arrived in Annecy in the early afternoon while Emmanuel Macron shared on Twitter the “absolute cowardice” of the author of the attack.
