In Syria, the current head of state, Bashar al-Assad, who has been elected for a new seven-year term, has once again won the presidential election, according to the Syrian parliament.
Bashar al-Assad has received more than 95% of the vote.
The other two candidates – former government minister Abdulla Sallum and the government’s fifth opposition member Mahmoud Marai – have thus lost.
The elections took place in Syrian government-controlled areas and in Syrian embassies abroad.
With the support of Russia and Iran, Assad has regained control of more than 60% of the territory in the war-torn country. The opposition has called the elections a farce, and the West has also called them captives.
Assada’s election is not recognized by the United States, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany and many other countries. The authoritarian leader himself rejects these accusations.
