Syrian Government Grants United Nations Approval for Aid Transport Into Northwestern Syria

The Syrian government granted the United Nations approval to use a border crossing with Turkey to continue transporting aid into northwestern Syria for another six months, after the Security Council failed to renew the authorization for the aid delivery operation.

Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations, Bassam al-Sabbagh, wrote in a letter to the Security Council on Thursday, seen by Reuters, that the delivery of U.N. aid should take place “in full cooperation and coordination with the Syrian government”.

Al-Sabbagh added that the Syrian government took the sovereign decision to grant the United Nations and its specialized agencies permission to use the Bab al-Hawa crossing.

He pointed out that it will be allowed to deliver humanitarian aid to civilians in need in northwestern Syria, in full cooperation and coordination with the Syrian government, for six months, starting on July 13.
