Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad, accompanied by an official delegation, arrived in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, ahead of the Arab Summit in Jeddah, on Friday.
The Syrian Foreign Minister said, in a press statement upon his arrival at Jeddah airport: “This is a new opportunity for us to tell our Arab brothers that we are not looking at the past, but rather at the future,” according to the Syrian News Agency.
Al-Miqdad added, “There are many challenges that we must discuss and mobilize our Arab forces to confront them, including the issue of the Arab-Israeli conflict and the issue of climate.”
Al-Miqdad expressed his happiness “with our presence in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and we wish this summit every success, and we are here to work with our Arab brothers to determine the parameters to face the challenges that we are all exposed to.”
Earlier, Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz invited Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to participate in the Arab summit in Jeddah on May 19.
At the beginning of this month, an extraordinary meeting of Arab foreign ministers in Cairo agreed to restore Syria’s membership in the Arab League, more than a decade after it was suspended as the uprising against Assad’s rule descended into armed fighting, after the protests were suppressed.
