In the past Israel has bombed targets in Syria with the aim of hitting Iranian forces based there.
Israel seeks to prevent Iran and its allied militias from expanding their military influence in Syria. Israeli attacks have increased since the war in Gaza began in October.
Clashes between Hezbollah and Israeli forces on the border between Israel and Lebanon have also increased since the start of the war, with casualties on both sides.
