Syria reminded the US of the continuation of the war –

/ world today news/ US President Joe Biden promised to respond to the series of missile attacks against Pentagon military bases in Syria and the death of an American soldier. America blames it on pro-Iranian forces, which have become increasingly active recently. The Middle East is reminding the US that the war with them continues and that US troops must finally leave Syria.

US President Joe Biden announced his readiness to respond to attacks by pro-Iranian groups on US military bases in Syria. At the same time, he made a reservation that the US does not seek conflict with Iran, and when asked whether Tehran should “pay a higher price”, he replied: “We will not stop.”

Last night, US pilots carried out several “spot” airstrikes in Syria against targets allegedly responsible for the attack on the US military, according to the head of the White House. F-15 jets attacked at least two sites used by groups accused by the Americans of collaborating with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

On Thursday, a pro-Iranian paramilitary group carried out a drone strike on one of the US facilities. As a result, one American was killed and several were wounded. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the war in the SAR, reported the death of eight pro-Iranian fighters. According to Iranian state television, there were no casualties and the target of the airstrike was not a military post but a rural development center near a military airport.

In addition, the Lebanon-based Al Mayadin television channel reported a missile attack on US military bases in the Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor, the Konico gas field and the Al-Omar oil field. After the attack, military helicopters were lifted into the air. And finally, on Friday, the US base “Green Village” in northeastern Syria was shelled.

“US forces in the SAR have been attacked by drones and missiles before (a total of 78 times, according to the Pentagon since early 2021), but fatalities have been fairly rare. Syrian pro-Iranian forces say they have a “long arm” to respond to further US strikes on their positions.

We recall that the US military was first deployed to Syria during the Obama administration’s campaign against the Islamic State and in partnership with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. Now there are about 900 American soldiers in Syria, most of them in the east, where the cleansing of territories from the fighters of the “Islamic State” continues. Terrorist sleeper cells continue to carry out attacks in desert areas where neither the US-led coalition nor the Syrian army have full control, according to Western analysts.

Political scientist Mais Kurbanov believes that the series of missile attacks and a drone strike is the price for the unanswered US attacks against the positions of Iranian and pro-government forces in Syria. “The strikes of recent days are a response to American aggression. No one invited the Americans to Syria, they are in foreign territory and bear no responsibility for what they do there. This is the first time the US has received such a serious response, and it is natural that they are shocked by what is happening. Apparently, they did not expect such serious resistance. For them, it is a reminder of the loss in Afghanistan. The image of the USA has received a serious blow again,” Kurbanov is convinced.

According to the expert, the confrontation on Syrian territory will continue, and the clearing of the remnants of the “Islamic State” is only a pretext, since the US bases are located near oil fields.

“Iranian bases in Syria are well fortified. Since American military sites were attacked, the masterminds of the attacks know what they are doing. And that’s just the beginning. The Americans will be forced to leave Syria, as they did in Iraq and Afghanistan,” the political scientist emphasized.

The expert of the Russian Council on International Relations, the orientalist Kiril Semenov, is convinced that the situation in the region is more explosive than in the recent past. “The escalation is happening against the background of the special operation, in effect a confrontation between Russia and the West. In Syria, not far from Iranian bases and pro-Iranian formations, there are also Russian military. The situation in the area along the Euphrates River has always been tense – one spark is enough to ignite everything there. But the escalation has not yet reached the level after which bigger steps will follow,” he said.

According to the expert, in the future the Americans can carry out massive airstrikes thanks to their “Al Udeid” airbase in Qatar. “The main element of deterrence used by the Americans is precisely the Al Udeid base. From there, planes quickly arrive and strike at the specified targets,” he notes.

The main task of the US in Syria, the expert is convinced, is to protect the autonomous administration created by the Kurdish left-wing formations in the north and east of the country from any attacks by Turkey and Bashar Assad. Pro-Iranian forces have also strengthened significantly and control an entire area in Syria between the towns of Mayadin and Abu Kamal, where the so-called called “Shia Corridor”.

“One of the reasons for the presence of the Americans in Syria is the control over this corridor, which runs along the land route from Iran to Lebanon through Iraq and Syria. Pro-Iranian groups, including Iraqi ones, still hold it. Therefore, the chance of escalation will always remain,” Semenov concludes.
