The alleged attack on a gas pipeline has led to a power cut across Syria, ministers said Monday, quoted by the state news agency.
The Minister of Electricity said that the explosion of a gas pipeline in the vicinity of Damascus on Sunday evening had “caused a blackout of electricity in all of Syria”, according to SANA. The Syrian electricity system relies on the supply of gas and fuel oil.
Some power plants were eventually reconnected and electricity was supplied to vital infrastructure, the minister added. He said that at dawn, electricity was gradually returning to several provinces.
SANA has released footage of a nighttime fire which it claims was caused by the explosion of the pipeline. The petroleum minister said the explosion on the main pipeline supplying southern Syria “may have been caused by a terrorist act,” but provided no further details.
