A special place in media history is the photograph of a bird blackened by the Kuwaiti oil that Saddam Hussein dumped into the Persian Gulf. This photo went down in history because it was iconic but… fake. It was part of the 1991 war propaganda against Iraq. Fake news monument.
On Thursday, the well-known international network CNN also managed to make history by airing a report from Damascus, Syria, so obviously staged that it caused countless ironic comments and outrage on social media.
“Syria is free.”
Extraordinary moment as @clarissaward and her team witness a Syrian prisoner freed from a secret prison in Damascus.

The CNN reporter visited a Damascus prison days after the prisoners had been freed and – miraculously – discovered one still there in a cell.
According to the “report” the prisoner was in a sunless dungeon for months. The last few days without food. In fact, when he comes out and faces the sun, he exclaims with joy.
Social media users immediately noticed that the “report” is completely “muff” for several reasons.
-There is no explanation why all the prisoners left and he stayed
-The black blankets he slept on look spotless when they should be gray from dust
-His clothes are spotlessly clean. They do not show the clothes of a person who has been in a cell for months
-His hair and beard look like they were cut very recently
-His nails are trimmed and clean
-When a man has had time to see sunlight, he needs time to get used to it, and he does not turn his face to the sky without pain in his eyes.
There’s also a “community note” below the CNN video on X, a community-approved user comment, that reads:
“Clarissa Ward has a history of fake clips along with misinformation. Just like the time he staged a fake rocket attack on Israel.”
Clarissa Ward is the CNN Middle East reporter who did this reporting and is featured in the video. It will go down in history for all the wrong reasons…
