DAMASCUS – Syria urged the UN to take action against United States of America (US) for its occupation of parts of Syria, as well as the illegal extraction of natural resources in the region. That’s the report from the Syrian government news agency, SANA.
Damascus is also demanding compensation from Washington for what it describes as “looting” of the country’s gas and oil.
In an article on Sunday, SANA cited letters sent by the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, as well as Albania, which assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council in September.
In it, Syrian diplomats called on the international body to end US violations of international law and the UN Charter, illegally stationing troops in the country’s northeast and southeast.
The ministry claims that in addition, Washington and its allied militant groups are also guilty of plundering the country’s wealth and strategic resources.
According to estimates cited in the letter, direct and indirect losses incurred by the US military to Syria’s oil sector and mineral wealth from 2011 to 2023 amount to USD 115.2 billion.
The letter ends with a demand that American officials be held accountable for these thefts and that the American government be forced to provide compensation for these thefts.
They also called for the withdrawal of all American military personnel from Syria and the return of all oil and gas fields under government control as reported by RTTuesday (12/9/2023).
