Syria confirms its readiness to discuss the demarcation of the maritime border with Lebanon

BEIRUT, October 25, 2022 (Xinhua) The Syrian ambassador to Lebanon, Ali Abdel Karim Ali, said on Tuesday that his country is open to delimit the maritime border with Lebanon.

He said this in a statement released by Ambassador Ali Abdel Karim to reporters after his meeting with Lebanese President Michel Aoun.

Aoun announced yesterday (Monday) that a Lebanese delegation would visit Syria tomorrow (Wednesday) to discuss the demarcation of the joint maritime border, but the media later claimed that Syria canceled or asked to postpone the Lebanese delegation’s visit.

Ambassador Ali Abdel Karim said: “The date was not canceled, but it was said that it was agreed later”, referring to “previous commitments”.

He added that “between Syria and Lebanon there are no closed places in all matters. There is a treaty of brotherhood and cooperation between the two countries, and Syria is always engaged, even in pending issues so that they are always facilitating and facilitating “.

Lebanon is seeking to demarcate its northern maritime border with Syria after it and Israel agreed to formulate a US proposal for an agreement to demarcate their maritime borders.

Syria had signed an agreement with a Russian energy company to start drilling for oil and gas in an offshore area, which Lebanon says overlaps its economic zone.

The problem between the two countries is limited to the overlap of Syrian maritime patch n. (1) with the Lebanese patches (1) and (2) over an area of ​​the Mediterranean that extends between 750 and 1,000 square kilometers. / ts /
