The International Basketball Federation chose Syria to host the Asian qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics, in a precedent that is the first since the war broke out in the country 12 years ago.
And the Syrian Basketball Federation announced in an official statement that the International Federation of the game agreed to grant the country the honor of hosting this great event.
“It is important for Syria to host these qualifiers for the first time, after a major break in foreign participation,” said the head of the Syrian Federation, Tarif Qutrash, in his interview with Agence France-Presse.
Regarding the cities that are preparing to host the matches, Qutrash added, “The qualifiers will be held in the city of Damascus exclusively at the request of the AFC, for the sake of airports. We hope that our team will perform well.”
The draw for the qualifiers placed the Syrian team in the second group, along with the teams of Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and India.
The teams were distributed into 5 groups in qualifiers, which will be held from August 12 to August 20, 2023, in the combined tournament system.
At the end of the qualifiers, one team from each group qualifies for the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will be held from July 26 to August 11.
