“Syria Back in Arab League: Diplomatic Ties Restored after 12-Year Hiatus”

Cairo: After a gap of 12 years, Syria is back in the Arab League. A meeting of foreign ministers of Arab countries agreed to bring Syria back into the league. The new move comes as Arab countries move to restore diplomatic ties with Syria under the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

In March 2011, Syria’s membership was canceled by the Arab League. The action came after President Bashar al-Assad ordered to suppress the popular uprising in Syria following the Arab Spring. It was decided to restore membership at a ministerial meeting held at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo the other day.

The return of Syria to the Arab League was discussed in a meeting held in Jordan last week, attended by representatives of countries such as Egypt, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. The Syrian representative also attended the meeting. The move was mediated by Jordan. After this, the matter was discussed by vote in the Arab League meeting. The Arab League summit is scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia on May 19. Yesterday’s meeting was before this.

Aljazeera reported that the earthquake that shook Turkey and Syria last February has increased the speed of new diplomacy. Along with this, Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia have decided to restore diplomatic relations with Iran, which supports Bashar’s regime. Last month, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud visited Damascus. This was the first visit by a Saudi official to Syria in over a decade.
