“Syphilis Cases Skyrocket in Indonesia: Causes and Risks”

Jakarta

Data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) show syphilis cases have increased rapidly over the last five years. Transmission of sexually transmitted diseases jumped 70 percent.

In 2018, only 12,484 cases of syphilis were detected. That number continues to increase, until in 2022, the number will reach 20,783 cases.

Syphilis or lion king is a highly contagious disease that is spread through sexual activity. Syphilis is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. These bacteria enter the body through small cuts or abrasions on the skin or mucous membranes.

The transmission of this disease is triggered by risky sexual behavior, one of which is free sex.

“Syphilis is indeed caused by a sexually transmitted disease and that is definitely due to free sex. What must be educated is that if you have sexual intercourse, you must use a barrier so that PMS does not occur,” said ob-gyn specialist Dr. Widyorini Lestari Hanafy, SpOG, SubSp Onk, when met at the office Ministry of PPPA, Friday (12/5/2023).

“But yes, the education is more upstream, so don’t have free sex,” he added.

The percentage of treatment in syphilis patients is still relatively low, which is only around 40 percent of patients. The rest do not receive treatment and have the potential to infect and cause defects in children born if infected during pregnancy.

In addition, the following are other risk factors that cause syphilis transmission to be susceptible, including:

  • Have sex with multiple partners
  • Men who have sex with men
  • Injecting drug use
