Mohammad Syahril Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) revealed syphilis cases in Indonesia had increased by nearly 70 percent in the last five years, from 2018 to 2022.
Responding to the data, Idham Choliq, a lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK) Muhammadiyah University (UM) Surabaya, expressed his views.
According to Idham, syphilis or the Lion King’s disease is caused Treponema pallidum bacteria which is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) can interfere with health if there is no adequate treatment.
“The disease starts as a painless sore, usually on the genitals, rectum or mouth. If left untreated, the disease can damage the heart, brain or other organs, and can be life-threatening,” he explained in a statement received, on Sunday (14/5/2023).
The spread of syphilis, said Idham, can occur from one person to another through direct contact with syphilis sores, or what is known as syphilis. chancre.
“Chancre can occur around the penis, vagina, anus, rectum, and lips or mouth,” he said.
Furthermore, he said that syphilis can be spread during vaginal, anal or oral sex, if it occurs in pregnant women it can transmit the infection to their unborn child.
“The average time between contracting syphilis and the start of the first symptoms is 21 days. However, it could also be between 10 and 90 days,” he said.
On that occasion, Idham also shared ways to avoid syphilis.
First, he emphasizes that someone is loyal to one partner or monogamy. Having a long-term, monogamous relationship with a partner who doesn’t have syphilis is the only effective way to prevent syphilis.
Second, he asked people to use condoms. Because, condoms that are used correctly every time someone has sex can reduce the risk of getting or suffering from syphilis.
“Condoms offer protection when they cover the infected area or potential exposure. However, syphilis transmission can occur with lesions that are not covered by a condom,” he explained.
Furthermore, he emphasized that one should avoid having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with syphilis sufferers. (ris/ihz/rid)
