Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes: From Sweet Breath to Dark Spots on the Back of the Neck

Type 2 diabetes can cause unusual symptoms.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Many people go undiagnosed when they already have type 2 diabetes. It could be because they don’t recognize the symptoms. Moreover, there are some unusual symptoms, including sweet breath and dark skin patches.

Skin disorders

Skin disorders often occur in diabetics because of high blood sugar levels. This can have an impact on blood vessels and nerves.

Acanthosis nigricans (AN) is a condition that is more frequently seen in those before diagnosis. It is characterized by dark patches on the skin that usually appear on the back of the neck.

The cosmetic doctor who works with RegenLab, Dr Julietta Gusarova, said acanthosis nigricans can also be found in various parts of the body that have skin folds. Acanthosis nigricans It can appear on the palms of the hands, armpits, or groin.

“In addition to the visible discoloration associated with the disorder, some people say their skin feels thicker,” Dr Gusarova told The Sunquoted Tuesday (9/8/2022).

Acanthosis nigricans can be treated by touching the root of the problem, namely diabetes.

Sweet breath like candy

Your breath can reveal how your body metabolizes food. If you have diabetes, bad-smelling breath can indicate diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a life-threatening disease if left untreated.

This is when the body enters ketosis, a state that is also achieved with a low-carb keto diet. When there is not enough glucose in the body to burn energy, the body uses fat instead. This process produces ketones, the symptom of which is breath that smells like candy.

DKA affects around four per cent of individuals with type 1 diabetes in the UK each year, according to the UK National Diabetes Audit. However, it can also occur in people with type 2 diabetes.

Other indicators of DKA, which can occur within 24 hours of a glucose deficiency, include increased thirst and dry tongue, regular urination, and abdominal pain and pain.

Sex problems

Diabetes affects so many aspects of a person’s health, including their sex life. “But sex may also be very uncomfortable for women for a number of reasons,” says Dr Agnieszka Nalewczynska, a consultant gynecologist who works with RegenLab.
