Acanthosis nigricans is a brown mark that appears on the side of the neck or armpit.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The American Diabetes Association says people who have high blood sugar levels tend to be more prone to bacterial infections, fungal infections, and itchy skin. In addition, there are certain conditions that are exclusive to diabetes.
Are you showing signs of acanthosis nigricans? What sign is that?
Reported on the page Express on Sunday (12/9), acanthosis nigricans is a brown mark that appears on the side of the neck, armpit, or groin area. Occasionally, these lesions can be seen on the hands, elbows, or knees and these signs develop when a person is very overweight.
“Diabetes can cause changes in the small blood vessels,” explains the American Diabetes Association.
These changes can lead to a skin problem called diabetic dermopathy. Appearing as light brown, scaly patches, in an oval or circular shape, they can be mistaken for age spots. This is especially true because the lesions do not hurt, itch, or open as sores.
When you look for it, such lesions often appear on the front of both feet. Although considered a “harmless” skin condition, high blood sugar itself can be a very dangerous health condition.
This is why it is so important to get a diagnosis as soon as possible, and to lower high blood sugar levels. “Another disease that may be caused by vascular changes is necrobiosis lipoidica diabetesorum (NLD),” the organization said.
NLD causes spots similar to diabetic dermopathy, but fewer, larger, and deeper. It often starts as a dull, red, raised area, the lesion turning into a shiny scar with a purple border.
The veins may become easier to see under the skin, and the NLD may become itchy and painful, sometimes, the spots will open. Once an open sore develops, it is very important to make an appointment with a doctor as soon as possible.
The global diabetes community is showing other warning signs of high blood sugar, including feeling very thirsty, having to go to the toilet frequently, dry mouth, feeling tired or lethargic, feeling uncomfortable, and irritable. One of the best ways to lower high blood sugar is to move around like walking. Strenuous exercise, on the other hand, can raise blood sugar because the body produces a stress response.
It will also help to drink more water when blood sugar levels are high, helping your body to excrete extra glucose. It is also useful to reflect on how much sugar you are consuming in your diet, adjust this if necessary.
