Jakarta (ANTARA) – University of Indonesia psychologist Kasandra A. Putranto said there are a number of symptoms of depression to watch out for, including feeling worthless, feeling excessive guilt, withdrawing from social life, and having difficulty concentrating.

“Depressed people also lose their spirits, have no energy, are hopeless, even worse are thoughts of death or suicidal thoughts,” Kasandra told ANTARA, Friday.

Not only psychologically and socially, Kasandra added, depressed people will also feel symptoms from physical aspects such as fatigue, physical pain, slowing of body movement. (psychomotor retardation), can’t sit still (psychomotor agitation), too much or too little sleep, and weight loss.

Kasandra then reminded that depression can be experienced by anyone, be it children, teenagers, adults, and the elderly.

In general, Kasandra said different age groups experience the same symptoms of depression. However, there are some differences in children and adolescents.

“If change mood in adults it is characterized by feelings of sadness, empty, and helpless, in children and adolescents it is indicated by feelings of irritability,” Kasandra said.

“In addition, children may also show symptoms such as physical complaints, sleep disturbances, and anxiety. While adolescents show depression or moody,” he added.

Kasandra also reminded to immediately see a psychologist or psychiatrist if a person has experienced trauma, has difficulty regulating emotions, cannot work or carry out responsibilities effectively, has disturbed sleep and appetite patterns, finds it difficult to build and maintain relationships, no longer enjoys activities that are enjoyable. being liked, or even using drugs or sex as an attempt coping.

If these symptoms occur in the closest person, Kasandra reminds that as a friend, someone should provide support and encourage him to seek professional help.

“In addition to being willing to be a listener, you must also help him to recognize the signs of depression and things that can make depression worse,” Kasandra said.

“He must also continue to be considered and remain alert to the risk of suicide that may be carried out. Take preventive measures and contact professional help if there is a suicide attempt,” he concluded.
