“Fibroids are a benign pathology and should be treated with the least invasive technique possible: medical treatment, IUD with hormones, Radiofrequency, embolization, HIFU, myomectomy by hysteroscopy with or without morcellator, myomectomy by laparoscopy or by laparotomy and hysterectomy would be reserved for those patients who want a definitive solution ”, he tells us.
“When conservative treatments have failed or in cases of women who do not have gynecological examinations, when we find very large fibroids that cause anemia, pain or even risk of compression problems (fibroids that reach the navel) you have to resort to invasive procedures or surgery “, explains to us. And it details that in most cases a surgery is possible preserving the uterus, as long as the patient so wishes, if she assumes the 1/1900 risk in children under 45 years of atypia (abnormality in the shape or size of the cells, which would mean having to remove the uterus) or 1/450 in those over 45 years of age. “If we opt for a surgery preserving the uterus, the patient also has to assume the 33% risk of fibroids reappearing”, he concludes.
