When the autonomic nerves are damaged due to diabetes, problems occur in regulating the functions of the organs and tissues of our body. Because of this, cardiovascular diseases, genitourinary system diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, orthostatic hypotension, sweating disorders, metabolic disorders, etc. may occur. According to the Korean Diabetes Association, ‘gastrointestinal autonomic neuropathy’ can be improved by slightly correcting eating habits.

Symptoms of gastrointestinal autonomic neuropathy include dysphagia, reflux esophagitis, constipation, diarrhea, and decreased gastrointestinal function. First, dysphagia refers to a condition in which food has difficulty moving from the mouth to the stomach through the throat and esophagus. Symptoms include hearing a cough, choking, voice change after eating, foreign body sensation in the throat, and food refluxing into the nose. It is helpful to eat small amounts of food frequently, avoid alcohol and coffee, keep your head elevated when sleeping, and manage your weight and stress.

Reflux esophagitis refers to the reflux of stomach contents or stomach acid into the esophagus, causing inflammation in the esophagus. Symptoms include heartburn, chest tightness, burping, foreign body sensation in the throat, voice changes, and chest pain. It is best to avoid overeating, eat small portions of food in several portions, and avoid eating at least 2 hours before going to bed. Reduce your intake of sour fruits, carbonated drinks, chocolate, and high-fat foods, and instead consume plenty of fibrous foods to prevent constipation.

If you have constipation, the number of bowel movements decreases, excessive force is required during bowel movements, stools become hard, and you feel uneasy after defecation. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, and consume less unripe fruits, flour and meat containing a lot of tannin, and foods high in fat. Instead, it is better to consume enough dietary fiber and water.

Diarrhea occurs when the number of bowel movements is more than 4 times a day. Or, it is a symptom of passing more than 250g of loose stool per day. If diarrhea lasts more than 2 to 3 weeks, it is defined as chronic diarrhea, and if it lasts longer than that, it is defined as acute diarrhea. If you have diarrhea, eat small, frequent meals and drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. It is best to avoid dairy products, including milk, as they can worsen symptoms, as well as strong seasonings, spices, and foods that are too hot or cold.
