Symbol of inclusive writing, the use of the midpoint will be banned by Valérie Glatigny: “It’s my objective”

If she intends to prohibit any use of the midpoint at school, Ms. Glatigny nevertheless confirmed this Wednesday that she wants to retain the decree framework approved during the previous legislature which provides for the feminization in FWB of a whole series of names, functions and professions.

Standard of inclusive writing, the use of the midpoint will be prohibited in schools in Wallonia and Brussels in order not to harm the learning of French and reading, the Minister of Education announced this Wednesday, Valérie Glatigny (MR).

My long-term goal is to ban inclusive writing via the midpoint“, confided the minister in a plenary session of Parliament in response to a topical question from MP Valérie Warzée-Caverenne (MR).

The midpoint, also called the middle point, has been used by some for several years with a view to more inclusive writing. According to its supporters, it allows certain terms to be written in a more egalitarian manner between genders. According to these detractors, this typographic sign, however, disrupts reading as well as the learning of grammatical rules, particularly among young people.

While supporting this feminization, MR and Engagés announced in their majority agreement published last summer that they wanted to abandon the use of inclusive writing in all texts and communications to those administered in favor of “a language understandable by all and respecting the rules.”

The formal ban on the midpoint in schools in Wallonia and Brussels had not been mentioned at that time.
