Sylwia Spurek wants to establish a new holiday. Especially for women

Spurek has prepared a petition to the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, in which she calls for the establishment of a new national holiday – the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Gender-Based Violence – “Rzeczpospolita” reported.

The former Spring MEP wants the holiday to be celebrated on November 25. It would not be a day off from work. November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, established in 1999 by the UN.

– This year marks 35 years since the Montreal massacre, during which a man killed a dozen women, claiming he was fighting feminism. For this reason alone, it is worth talking about violence against women today, although in reality every opportunity is good to publicize the fact that women are not safe at home, at work, on the street, and with the development of technology, also on the Internet – argues Sylwia Spurek.

The former MEP argues that such a holiday should also be established in Poland, because “gender-based violence is a phenomenon deeply rooted in gender inequality and constitutes one of the most significant violations of human rights”.

If the petition meets the formal requirements, it is sent to the Petitions Committee. The Committee may issue a negative opinion and suspend its progress, or a positive opinion. Then a decision is made to prepare a bill or a desideratum to the government.

Spurek wanted “100 percent veganization”

Sylwia Spurek is known for her radical views on veganism. In February 2023, a storm erupted around the fact that Warsaw is in the C40 Cities group, or a hundred cities that strive to build “just communities”. The report, prepared for this organization by researchers from Leeds, recommended radical steps to – as it was called – “save the climate”.

The radical concept raised objections from many politicians. Rafał Trzaskowski’s colleagues from his party also treated it with reserve. MEP Sylwia Spurek did not like this approach. “It is interesting that this graphic caused such fear. Populists launched a hysterical attack, and the opposition doesn’t have the courage admit that without these actions we will not stop the climate catastrophe. One of the necessary conditions is 100% vegan i consigning the livestock sector to history” – she wrote on social media.
