Sylwia Spurek Wants to Commemorate Women. She Proposes a New Holiday – Wprost

As the Left politician emphasized, this year marks 35 years since the Montreal massacre. In that incident, a man killed a dozen women while proclaiming his fight against feminism.

– For this reason alone, it is worth talking about violence against women today, although in reality every opportunity is good to publicize the fact that women are not safe at home, at work, on the street, and with the development of technology, also on the Internet – explained Sylwia Spurek.

The former MEP, who won her seat on the lists of Wiosna Robert Biedroń, has filed a petition in the Sejm on this matter. She wants to establish a Day of Remembrance for Victims of Gender-Based Violence. It would fall on November 25 and be a regular working day.

This is no coincidence. On this day, since 1999, the United Nations has been marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. According to Spurek, “gender-based violence is a phenomenon deeply rooted in gender inequality and is one of the most significant violations of human rights.”

“33% of European women experience violence in their lives – physical, psychological, sexual or economic – simply because they were born female. Around one million Polish women experience sexual or physical violence every year. 95% of the perpetrators of this violence are men,” we read in the petition.

“The day commemorating the victims of gender-based violence will serve as a reminder of the need to combat this social problem, and will also inspire legislative changes aimed at effectively countering violence, better protecting victims and more effectively prosecuting perpetrators,” Spurek concluded.

The petition of the former MEP was supported by lawyers such as Prof. Monika Płatek and Prof. Eleonora Zielińska, as well as Kamila Ferenc, vice-president of the Foundation for Women and Family Planning, a member of the State Tribunal. MP Monika Rosa from KO stated in a conversation with the portal rp.pl that such a day could be conducive to reflection. However, she emphasized that an effective anti-violence policy of the state is more important.
