The North Sea island of Sylt attracts numerous visitors with its many well-known shops. Especially in the city center of Westerland, Friedrichstrasse is a lively meeting place at any time of the year.
There, visitors can expect a wealth of offerings, from practical everyday items to charming little things that round off the shopping experience. The catering industry is particularly well represented and invites you to linger. But Sylt lovers have had to do without a cult shop for several months because it has closed its doors. And a bad suspicion is currently making the rounds on the island.
Sylt: Popular café close
The “Leysieffer” bistro, directly opposite McDonald’s and known for its distinctive ice storm, is a real eye-catcher. However, anyone who wants to enjoy fine chocolates, Baumkuchen or coffee specialties will be disappointed: a sign with the inscription “closed due to lack of staff” hangs in the window. But there is more to this closure than just a lack of staff.
According to the “shz”, the praline manufacturer Leysieffer is insolvent and the employees of the Sylt branch have not received any wages in the last two months. A lawyer has already been appointed as a provisional insolvency administrator.

Despite the hope of receiving insolvency money, the employees are facing an uncertain future. Some are already reporting problems paying the rent for the company apartment on Sylt – an additional burden in this uncertain situation.
Sylt: Rumors were already making the rounds
Rumors had been circulating for weeks that Leysieffer was on the verge of bankruptcy because of a lack of wages. The uncertainty grew as the traditional company apparently slipped deeper and deeper into the crisis.
Since the end of September, Dieter Metz has been recorded in the commercial register as the sole managing director of Leysieffer. In a conversation with “shz” he explained that the branch on Sylt was closed because employees had quit and no new staff could be found.
More news:
In addition, a high level of sickness and some layoffs in production led to further difficulties. Now some employees have already filed a complaint about delaying bankruptcy. What will happen next with the bistro remains unclear. One thing is certain, however: Sylt lovers still have to avoid a visit to the “Leysieffer”.
